Gin may be the first mention of the name “Old-Fashioned” in regards to a cocktail. This cocktail involves smoking with oak. Smoking the cocktail gives it that woody, aged taste that you would get with Bourbon or Rye Whisky.
So don’t let the Gin in this cocktail fool you into thinking its going to be a juniper forward tasting Negroni without the vermouth. This is an old fashioned through and through. So check out the recipe below for the Old Fashioned Gin homage to Jerry Thomas and his 1862 guide on how to mix drinks.
Which gin to use?
London dry gin will be your best bet. The less sweet the better. You want to avoid any over riding flavours other then juniper. Stick to traditional, juniper forward London dry.
The perfect sipper
This cocktail easily makes for the perfect sipping cocktail. If you love these hard-hitting classic cocktails, then this one will work perfectly. Its as if a Old fashioned, negroni and martini had a baby. That’s probably the best way i could describe this taste sensation.
I have a whole article all about how to smoke cocktail which you can find here.
It will explain everything you need to know about smoking cocktail and exactly how to go about doing it. Don’t get me wrong. If you cant get hold of a smoking gun, then by all means dont let that discourage you.
Try it without the smoking gun. It will lack the overall woody flavour this cocktail needs but will be just as delicious in its own right.
If you have your heart set on smoking this cocktail but don’t own a smoking gun, you can pick one up by clicking the link below.
That’s the smoking gun i use. You can smoke all kinds of cocktails with that and not just cocktails. You can smoke food aswell. But dont worry, i wouldnt promote something i dont use or love myself and believe me, that smoking gun is something i love.
