What Is Saline?
Saline is a mixture of salt and water. Our palates can detect five different flavours: salt, sour, sweet, bitter and umami. By utilising all 5 in a balanced way, your cocktail has potential to be, well, damn right delicious. that’s just the way our brains works. The way it maps flavour. But there is more about that in our science of flavour section over in the basics. Back to the saline. You want to use saline in the form of drops. And depending on what ingredients you have affects the way the salt reacts. Drinks high in citrus tend to get more of a refreshing feel, certain ingredients become more aromatic. Its a quick and cheap way to take your classics to the next level. I also add a dash or 2 of saline to my Mojitos, Daiquiris, Margaritas and Side Cars and South Sides. Think of saline as your flavour booster.
How To Make It
Dissolve 1 teaspoon of salt per 100ML of purified water. It helps dissolve the salt if you use boiling water.
Transfer the solution to a dropper bottle and you’re ready to go.
How To Use Saline Solution
Add between 1 and 5 drops of your saline solution to your cocktail. It shouldn’t be enough for you to taste salt, remember, you’re only adding it to enhance the other flavours, NOT to taste salt… unless you’re going for a savoury cocktail, in which case, go nuts! Even though you’re not wanting to taste salt. you still want it to work. It should be enough to noticeably amplify the other ingredients in the Cocktail.
